Brian was born December 18th in Inglewood, California. He grew up listening to his father’s jazz recordings. His uncles played Colombian and Latin music. Their voices and guitars filled the air with music, infusing Brian’s growing, innate rhythmic sense.
He began playing piano at the age of 10. A few years later, he began playing guitar. But, by the age of 16, he found the bass and knew that was his instrument. If you ask Brian why he gravitated from guitar to bass he’d tell you, “The guitar has too many strings.”
Brian studied bass at Whittier College where the renowned flautist Danilo Lozano (of Mongorama) remains chair of the Music Department. In 2001 Brian graduated Whittier College with a Bachelor of Music Performance on String Bass. During his college years, Brian began playing in local clubs. He quickly became known for his musicianship, professionalism, broad knowledge of styles and the ability to seamlessly play with any group.
After graduation, Brian continued locking himself in his room his intensely practicing 8 + hours a day, listening to all the great jazz recordings and honing his reading chops. He continued to build his professional career playing with big bands, salsa and funk groups.
